Massachusetts Unemployment Claims by Workforce Development Area – December 2020 UI Claims December 2020

Unemployment claims fell by 37,310 to 149,251 in December with all 16 Workforce Development Areas (WDA’s) posting declines. Claims declined in 21 of 24 occupational fields with Management Occupations accounting for the largest decrease in claims (-15,555), followed by Office and Administrative Support (-4,108) and Sales and Related (-3,829). Claims rose in Building and Grounds Maintenance (2,185), Construction and Extraction (1,851) and Farming, Fishing, and Forestry (36).

Low wage workers, those earning less than $21k annually before filing for unemployment, accounted for 27% of claimants up 2% from November. Those previously earning between $21-$36k accounted for 23% of claimants up from 21% in November.
Female claimants fell 23,133 to 75,523, while males fell 14,169 to 73,738. Females represent 51% of total claimants and males 49%.
